BenRaich Scotch & Slane Irish Whiskey Tasting

The story of BenRiach is typical of the great Speyside distilleries. Built in 1898, the distillery is sited amongst the rolling barley fields that rise to the foothills of the Grampian Mountains. The barley used in crafting the whisky was grown around the distillery and the water was, and still is, drawn through the rock that lies deep below the distillery. The barley, harvested from the fields surrounding the distillery, would be spread across the floors of the malting loft to germinate. Peat, cut from the hills, fired the kiln and produced the heat required to control the germination process, and the distinctive peat scented smoke would be seen curling upwards from the malting chimneys throughout the year. The distillery manager would oversee the slow and deliberate crafting process of The BenRiach whisky – managing the transformation from malted barley to wash, to distilled spirit and into high quality oak casks, in which the whisky would then mature. This was the beginning of the The BenRiach story.

Due to its especially high rye content, Bulleit Bourbon has a bold, spicy character with a finish that’s distinctively clean and smooth. Medium amber in color, with gentle spiciness and sweet oak aromas. Mid-palate is smooth with tones of maple, oak and nutmeg. Finish is long, dry, and satiny with a light toffee flavor.

We are proud to call Baltimore our home and since April 2017, have been distilling and aging our proprietary straight rye whiskey from our distillery on Baltimore’s waterfront. It takes 4 years to get to the perfect taste so stay tuned!

But we wanted to share our Maryland-style rye whiskey before our distillery was built. So we asked our friends in Indiana to distill our two different proprietary mash bills for us. They make great whiskies out there and we couldn’t be prouder of the product. Once the whiskey is aged, it’s shipped to our Maryland distillery in barrels and our distilling team proofs it with Sagamore Farm spring water, before hand-bottling and labeling each one.

Belle Isle Moonshine Tasting

Moonshine has gotten a bad rap over the years, but we’re out to spread the good word (and good moonshine). So how did this all start?

We’ve got to go back to the beginning, when early settlers in Virginia first began experimenting with native corn. Colonists quickly found that corn made for better beer - much better than the British ale they were used to. And after a few runs of corn through a shabby still, the corn whiskey “moonshine” was born.

Fast-forward a few years, where moonshine faded from popularity as barrel-aged whiskies became all the rage. Why? By aging spirits, they could mask the harsh flavors of unperfected moonshine.

It wasn’t until 1860s that moonshine would come back into the public eye, all thanks to Civil War soldiers taking a surplus of corn rations and elevating the moonshine distilling process by using copper kettles as higher quality stills. Where did this happen? On none other than Belle Isle itself.

With Prohibition following a few decades later, what Virginia knew and loved as moonshine became synonymous with all sorts of unregulated, untaxed, and impure distillates being distributed illegally throughout the country. By the time Prohibition was all said and done, the word “moonshine” had left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

That’s why, when brothers-in-law Vince Riggi and Brian Marks sat down together over a drink in 2013, they realized their dream of seeing moonshine on the shelf and in the hands of people everywhere. And not moonshine like we’ve come to know it; they dreamed up a premium moonshine, made using the same techniques passed down by our American ancestors, distilled from 100% organic corn, and made with only the best ingredients.

Meet the Winemaker Claudio Fenocchio!

Five generations of Fenocchios have been producing wine from their holdings in the heart of the Bussia in Monforte d’Alba since 1894. Most of the production was sold locally up until 1964, when the ambitious and energetic Giacomo Fenocchio took over for the estate. His goal was to make the finest wines in all of Barolo, so he purchased prime parcels in some of the best crus in the Langhe – including Villero in Castiglione Falletto and Cannubi.

Today, Giacomo’s son Claudio has taken over winemaking duties for the estate, continuing his father’s tradition of making pristine wines from the greatest vineyards in Barolo. Use whichever word you want, minimalist, traditionalist, non-interventionist, – all that matter is that Claudio’s wines exhibit a level of terroir clarity that is only found in the top echelon of producers. If you’re looking for the next star winemaker in Italy, look no further. Just recently, The New York Times rated Fenocchio number 2 in a tasting of Barolos – coming behind only Elio Altare and ahead of Elio Grasso, Massolino, and Vietti. Claudio manages some 7 hecatres of vineyards in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and of course, the Bussia of Monforte. Total average annual production is about 3,000 cases.
